Gastrodiplomacy
YEAR 9 ENGLISH
Fathimath Sauna and Balgish Mydeen
As the term Gastrodiplomacy was introduced to the year 9s in English lesson, they were initially puzzled. Through research they found out that it’s all about promoting a culture and region through food, generally for economic and political reasons where government of one country grants funds to open up restaurants to serve its traditional food in different parts of the world.
As part of the learning, students had a ‘tried and tasted’ competition in which they had to identify the ingredients in 7 types of flavoured drinks.
Students prepared their cultural food and delicacies at home and shared among their peers. There were a variety of mouth-watering dishes ranging from Africa, Middle east, and South east nations. The adventure concluded with a lunch at Papparich restaurant that serves Indonesian cuisine.
"Mmmm .... this tastes rose milk..."
"Sweet tooth, anyone?"
"This has a wierd taste!"
"This is yum! May I please have more?"
Sweet and savoury delicacies displaying the Mums' culinary skills. "Let's dig in!"
Ms Chloe, the manager of Papparich, narrating her franchise business and her aspirations.
Students settling in a cosy corner of the restaurant, enjoying the aroma of Indonesian spices while the clattering of plates from the kitchen and the rythmic stir-frying dishes make their anticipation grow for the richly spiced, savoury flavors of the cuisine to arrive.
The Anatomy Museum
Khalil Simon Kwan
On Tuesday 20th August, our brightest Year 12 students got an exclusive tour of the Flinders University - College of Medicine and Health Sciences learning facilities.
These students had just completed their UCAT (University Clinical Aptitude Test), with the aim of gaining an offer into Medicine after completing their Year 12 studies.
The tour included an insightful presentation on pathways to study Medicine and Allied Health courses at Flinders University, and the required ATAR and UCAT scores for entry.
The fascinating tour also gave our students an opportunity to visit the Anatomy Museum, where they saw organs and bodies that had been donated to science over the decades for studies. As well as being able to see lectures and student group tutorials in action across campus.
Fundraiser
Year 7 Fundraiser
Dawood Perotta
Students worked in teams to practically apply concepts learnt in Business and Economics by initiating their own fundraiser sale. All proceeds went towards building a well in Afghanistan and aid in Gaza. This experience allowed students to enhance skills in budgeting, marketing and advertising, supply and demand, profit, loss and more. The $2,000+ was raised which will, insha'Allah, count as Sadaqa Jariya (ongoing charity), a teaching that is highly encouraged in Islam, and one that was emphasized throughout the whole project.
Recycling Project
Year 7 Recycling
Dawood Perrotta
Year 7 students took social action by collecting recyclable cans and bottles to raise money to build a well in Afghanistan. This tied into their topic on 'water' and was an application of the hadith of the Prophet Muhammad where he specified water as being the best form of charity.

On Tuesday 24th September, our year 9 students prepared their cupcakes during Lessons 1 & 2, and then decorated their cupcakes during Lessons 4 & 5.Judging took place at the beginning of lunch, based on their kitchen skills, uniqueness, creativity, presentation, taste, texture and clean-up.All students took pride in their work, which is evidenced by the fabulous creations produced.
